Release of hybrids and high yielding varieties in cereals,
pulses, oil seeds etc. for the benefit of the farming community
are the impressive records of the research. The University
has developed and introduced as many as 143 improved varieties
which include 9 hybrids since inception. They are as follows

Southern Dry Zone |
|
| |

KRH-2: A unique Hybrid with an yield capacity
of 80 to 90 q/ha has been recommended for the State
as well as for East, West and Southern parts of the
country which include 11 States. It matures 20-25 days
earlier and yields 5-10 q more than the best check variety
Jaya. It is resistant to Neck Blast and this has spread
over 5,000 ha in the State and has contributed additional
returns of Rs.79 lakhs. This variety has stood first
at All India level in-terms of its performance.
- Improved varieties IET-8116 with an yield potential
of 65 to 75 q/ha has been recommended for Cauvery command
area. BR-2655 with an yield potential of 75 to 85 q/ha
has been recommended for maidan area. KMP-101 a medium
duration paddy maturing in 130 - 135 days with an average
yield of 65 – 75 quintals per hectare is suitable for
this zone. Further, two more varieties from Maharashtra
viz. MTU-1001, a medium duration, semi-tall variety
maturing in about 130-135 days, with an yield potential
of 6.0 to 6.5 t/ha suitable for cultivation both in
Kharif as well as in summer and MTU-1010 a short duration,
dwarf variety maturing in 120 days with an average yield
potential of 5.5-6.0 t/ha., tolerant to both BPH and
blast and suitable for cultivation, both in Kharif as
well as summer have been introduced.

Eastern Dry Zone |

- Aerobic Paddy
-MAS-946-1 , a high yielding with an average
yield potential of 5.5 t/ha gives 42% higher yield compared
to the check Rasi with duration of 120 days which saves
50% of water has been identified at Bangalore.

Southern Transitional Zone |
|
| |
Kadamba (FARO-37), paddy variety with an average
grain yield potential of about 65 q/h and duration of 135-140
day suitable for irrigated areas has identified at Honnaville.
|
|
| |
Hill Zone |
|
| |
- IR-5773 with an yield potential of 55 to
60 q/ha has been recommended for low land area. While,
IET-13901 with an yield potential of 69 q/ha has been
recommended for Hill Zone. Whereas,
KHRS-21 a high yielding,
semi tall paddy variety with a duration of 160 -165
days and yield potential of 50 to 55 q/ha has been recommended
for release for lowlands of Hill Zone. KHP-10 (59 q/ha),
a red rice variety which gives 25 % higher yield compared
to the check KHP-2 has been identified at Mudigere.
The variety is tolerant to blast disease and is recommended
to cultivate in midlands of hill zone. PUBM-8, a mutant
of PUB-Local with an yield potential of 62 q/ha with
an increase of 54% higher than the check Hemavathi has
been recommended cultivation lowlands.

Coastal Zone |
|
| |
- KCP-1 with an yield capacity of 40 to 45
q/ha has been recommended for coastal area. Further,
Champaka(IET-14758) , a medium duration red kernelled
paddy variety maturing in 125-130 days with an average
grain yield of 50 q/ha and straw yield of 66 q/ha. Another
medium tall variety viz.,
IET-14758
, with a duration
of 145-150 days, with an average yield of 50 q/ha and
resistant to gall midge has been recommended for cultivation
in low lands of Coastal Zone.

Millets for Masses |

The production of ragi has improved tremendously with the
development of Indaf varieties by Padmasree Lakshmanaiah.
Shift in monsoon and occurrence of blast in the recent year
necessitated evolving medium / short duration varieties
with blast resistance which resulted in release of GPU varieties.
Krishna (GPU-28) yields 40-45 q/ha under irrigated and 30-35
q/ha under rainfed conditions. Somana (GPU-26) is an alternative
to Indaf-9 variety and yields 30-35 q/ha under rainfed conditions.
The variety Krishna
(GPU-28)
gained much appreciation by
the farmers and it has spread over 2 lakh ha. area so far
in the State. L-5 is a long duration and a substitute for
Indaf-1 and Indaf-8 varieties.
MR-6 is a high yielding,
light brown colour ragi with a duration of 120 days and
yield potential of 45 – 50 q/ha under irrigated condition
and 30-35 q/ha under rainfed condition. This variety is
highly tolerant to neck and finger blast.
GPU-48 , a short
duration variety, which matures in about 100 days with an
yield of 37 q/ha. It is tolerant to blast and suitable for
catch cropping (time and space) under irrigated conditions.
Proso millet variety
GPUP-21 developed at Bangalore with
bold grains, maturing in 70-75 days, with an yield potential
of 15 q/ha has been released at the national level for cultivation
in Karnataka and Tamilnadu. GPU varieties and L-5 are recommended
for low to medium rainfall areas of southern Karnataka.
The investment of release of GPU series Ragi has contributed
net returns of Rs. 50 crores annually. |

MAIZE |

- Maize composites
NAC-6004 (56 q/ha) and
NAC-6002
(57 q/ha) have been recommended for southern, central,
eastern dry and southern transitional zone. Both are
resistant to downy mildew and turcicum leaf blight diseases.
- A hybrid maize viz.,
NAH-2049
(90-100 q/ha) with
high adoptability and tolerance to both turcicum leaf
blight and downy mildew diseases has been identified
from ARS, Naganahalli which is superior in yielding
ability compared to almost all public and private.

- Pigeon Pea Variety
BRG-1, a dual purpose
variety with duration of 175 to 190 days and average
yield potential of 14 q/ha.
- As an improvement over BRG-1 another pigeon pea
variety viz.,
BRG-2, has been identified for suitable
late sown conditions with a duration of 145 days and
potential grain yield of 13 q/ha.
-
ICP-7035, a dual purpose, medium duration (160-170
days) variety yielding on par with TB-7 (12 q/ha) has
been identified for cultivation in Sterility Mosaic
Disease prone areas of Zone-5.
- Cowpea varieties KBC-2 (13 q/ha),
IT-38956-1 (12.5 q/ha) and
KM-5 (12 q/ha) have been
recommended for southern, central and eastern dry zone.
- Two desi type Chickpea varieties
JG-11 (20-25 q/ha) and
Vishal (18-20 q/ha) and one
Kabuli type
KAK-2 (10-12 q/ha) have been recommended
for central dry zone.
- Blackgram variety LBG-525 with a yield
potential of 12 q/ha, maturing in 70-75 days is recommended
for southern transition zone.
- Horsegram PHG-9 (9 q/ha) has been recommended
for southern, central and eastern dry zone.
- Fieldbean variety
HA-4 with an yield
potential of 101 q/ha with 14% higher yield compared
to the ruling check HA-3 has been recommended for zone-5.
- An under utilized Ricebean variety KBR-1(7q/ha)
has been identified from Bangalore and recommended for
cultivation in zone-5.

OIL SEEDS |
|
| |
- Sunflower hybrids
KBSH-41 (15-17 q/ha with an oil content of 42 - 42%),
KBSH-42 (16-18 q/ha with an oil content 39-41%) and
KBSH-44 (20 q/ha with an oil content of 36-38% )
have been recommended for southern, central, eastern dry and southern transitional zones. These are tolerant to downy mildew, alternaria rust and necrosis diseases.
The performance of these varieties at All India level has out scored all other private hybrids.
- Groundnut variety K-134 (14-15 q/ha with an oil content of 45.9%), VRI-2 (14-15 q/ha with an oil content of 45.3%)
and
GPBD-4 with an average pod yield of 14 q/ha under rainfed condition and resistant to tikka, leaf spot and leaf rust.
- SesamumT-7 (7 q/ha) has been recommended for southern, central and eastern dry zone.

Niger variety KBN-1 (4.7 q/ha) with 37% oil content has been recommended for Zone-5.

DCH-32 a hybrid castor maturing in about 160-180 days with an yield potential of 20–24 q/ha and oil content of 48 per cent
and DCS-9 (Jyothi), another castor variety maturing
in about of 120-150 days and yield potential of 15-20 q/ha and oil content of 49% have been released from ZARS, Hiriyur.

- Sugarcane Co 8371 with an yield potential of 180 t/ha has been recommended for Cauvery and Bhadra Command Area.
- A mid-late maturing sugarcane variety
Co 86032 developed at Mandya by crossing
Co 62198 and CoC 671 with cane yield of 172 t/ha and sugar yield of 25 t/ha has been released by both Central
and State Variety Release Committee for cultivation in entire peninsular zone including Karnataka.

TOBACCO |

- Tobacco variety KST-19 with an yield capacity of 12.5 to 13 q/ha has been recommended for southern transitional zone.
More than 75% of the cigarette tobacco area has been occupied by these two varieties. The amount spent on tobacco research
since 1976 to 1993-94 being Rs.127 lakhs,
the additional returns each year due to introduction of these new varieties have contributed more than Rs. 8 crores.

TOMATO |

Three Tomato varieties viz.
- TLB-111- Vaibhav (450-500 q/ha. round and light red fruit)
- TLB-130 - Nandi (450-500 q/ha, round and red fruit)
- TLB-182 - Sankranthi (450-500 q/ha, oblong, deep red, firm and export quality fruit)
have been recommended for southern, central eastern dry and southern transitional zone.
- Vegetable Cowpea variety PKB-6 (11 t/ha) with a duration of 100 days has been recommended for Zone-5.
- Brinjal purple coloured
Punjab Moti Brinjal variety with a maturity period of 110-115 days and yield potential
of 8 t/ha is recommended for rainfed situations of Zone-7.
- Chilli variety Ceylon (for green chilli purpose) with a duration of 165 days and yield potential 58 q/ha (green chilli) recommended for Zone-5, 6 and 7.
- Cashew H – 1608 (Hybrid-Dhana)
- Chintamani -3 comes to bearing early. A ten year old tree gives an average yield of 12kg with nut yield of 7.94 g and suitable for export.
It is recommended for cultivation in Maidan areas.

- MA-1 (Aishwarya) clone of alphanso variety of mango is outstanding with an yield of 10 t/ha, regularity in bearing
and lower incidence of spongy tissue (11%). The clone has been recommended and released for general cultivation purposes.

- Lucerne RL-88, high tonnage fodder variety of Lucerne with yield potential of 80-85 t/ha recommended for zone-4 and 5.
