The department of Statistics was established in the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore on 4thJuly, 1966 as per the status and Act.No.23/1963.
The Department is offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the students enrolled in this University in all the disciplines viz. Agriculture,
Horticulture, Agricultural Marketing and cooperation, Agricultural Engineering, Sericulture and Forestry. The postgraduate programme in Agricultural
Statistics leading to M.Sc (Agri) degree in Agricultural Statistics was started in the year 1978. In the beginning one undergraduate course for Agriculture,
two courses for Veterinary were compulsory. So also, two basic courses were compulsory for all the PG students enrolled in the University. At present the
department is offering three courses for undergraduate students and about 20 courses for postgraduate students of different disciplines catering to
the needs of individual departments.
Department activities:
Important activities of the department are grouped under the heads Teaching, Research and Statistical consultancy
Teaching:The department is offering M.Sc(Agri) programme in Agricultural Statistics. The department is also offering postgraduate courses in Statistics,
Mathematics and Computer applications to the students of other departments according to their needs.
Research:The staff of the department are also actively involved in research. Two externally funded research
projects are in operation in the department.
Research project on “Role and contribution of irrigation on non farm activities – a case of Cauvery
command area in Karnataka”, funded by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme implementation, GOI. Cost: Rs 3.81 Lakhs, PI: Dr. M. Gopinatha Rao
Research project on “National Information System on Agricultural Education Network in India (NISAGENET)” –an ICAR network project.
Cost: Rs 0.60 Lakhs per year for three years. Nodal officer: Mr. M. V. Sholapurkar.
Besides these projects, individual teachers carry out research in their respective fields of specialization.

Theory and applications of sampling
Statistical applications in agriculture and allied fields
International Biometric Society (Indian Region) is located in the department.
