The Department of Entomology at the University of Agricultural Sciences,
Bangalore is one of the oldest in the country, tracing its origin to the
Entomology Division started in 1960 by the then Mysore Government to offer pest
control solutions to farmers. It became a part of the Agricultural school in 1946
with the mandate of teaching, research and extension and finally a University Department in 1966.
While there are always more peaks to be scale, the Department which had the
mandate of finding solutions to pest problems, has fulfilled its objectives
to a great extent, It can proudly claim to have found solutions to most of the pest
oblems nagging all farming systems in Karnataka, ranging from subsistence
farming to high-tech horticulture.
A major achievement of the Department has been balance achieved in pursuing both the basic
and applied aspects of entomology. The Department is particularly proud of its achievements in taxonomy,
soil biology (white grubs, termites), acarology and ecological aspects in entomology.
