Karnataka state enjoys a premier positin in the
horticultural map of India with an area of 16 lakh ha
and a production of over 114 lakh metric tones of
horticultural produce worth Rs.5874 crores which
accounts to 42 percent of the total income derived from
the aggriculturae sector.The horticultural crops
generate employment and high nutritive value. they are
highly priductive and profitable besides having
tremendous export potential.
Genesis of the Department
Horticulture discipline established in 1946 with the
establishment of College of Agriculture at Hebbal.
Separate department status was attained from 1964
with the formation of University of Agriculture
Sciences(UAS).Bangalore.
B.Sc.(Hort.)degree programme was initiated for the
first time in the country during 1972.
Elevated to the status of the Division in 1976.
Recognised by department of Science and
Tecnology.Government of India,by sponsoring FIST
programme during 2004-05

Teaching
The Department is offering courses under UG and PG
programmes.In Post Graduate programme,M.Sc.(Hort.)
degree is awarded in five disciplines viz., Friut
Science,Vegetable Science, Floriculture and Landscape
Gardening, Plantation ,Aromatic Madicinal and Spices and
Post Harvest Tecnology, besides Ph.D. in Horticulture.

Research
The faculty is handling various outside funded research
projects worth of Rs.150 lakhs in addition to several
UAS projects in different disciplines of
Horticulture.The important research areas include Crop
improvement and Production Technology in Horticulture
crops,Plant propagation, Dry land Horticulture,
Precision farming.True potato seed (TPS) Production,
Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Micro propagation ,in
vitro mutation breeding ,genetic fingerprinting and Post
harvest technology with an emphasis on value addition
Extension
The faclty is actively involved in transfer of
technology by organizing traning
programmes,workshops,seminars, guest
lectures,demonstrstions,exhibitions,field days,field
vists and replying to querries.Information also extended
to the farmers through radio talks,TV programmes,popular
articles and other publications from time to time
