The Department of Seed Technology was established in the year 1976.
Later on the Department was renamed as Department of Seed Science and Technology in the year 1998. The Department has
been entrusted with responsibilities of
undertaking teaching, research and extension activities in various aspects of Seed Science and Technology.
Objectives
The Department functions with the following objectives:
To offer the courses in Seed Science and Technology for under-graduates
in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agriculture Marketing,
Agricultural Engineering and Forestry and masters and Ph.D. degree programmes in Seed Science and Technology
To conduct research on various aspects especially on:
Standardization of seed production technologies for different crops.
To carry out the fundamental and applied research in Seed Science and Technology.
To evolve suitable post-harvest processing technology for upgrading quality of seeds.
To evolve suitable pre-storage and mid storage seed treatments to control seed
deterioration and maintain seed viability and vigour during storage.
To evolve suitable seed storage containers for prolonging the seed viability.
To involve in seed extension activities like:
Imparting training to seed certification officers, seed testing officers, seed producers and seed dealers etc.
To collaborate with National, International and other Research Organizations dealing with seed.

Under Commercial Agriculture – an hands-on training course
on “Commercial Seed Production” is being offered to B.Sc. (Agri.) students by this Department
RESEARCH
Research on various aspects of seed science and technology especially
on quality seed production, processing, testing, storage, seed quality enhancement, cultivars purity testing etc in cereals,
millets, fiber crops, oil seeds, pulses, forage crops, vegetables
& flower crops, medicinal plants and tree crops is being undertaken to cater to the needs of seed industry.
EXTENSION
Training on seed production and seed storage in varieties and hybrids in Agriculture and
Horticulture crops are being given to seed production and extension functionaries.
Field demonstrations at village level on seed testing, seed hardening and other seed production techniques are being provided.
Besides the staff are also involved in bimonthly workshop to address the farmers problems on seed matters.
Addressing the issues of seed maters through Dooradarshan and Radio talks.
