Dr. M.A. Shankar
Dean (Agri),
Agricultural College
By recognizing the importance of agricultural education in rural areas,
the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore has rightly selected
Hassan as the ideal location to start Agricultural College.
The district has varied agro-climatic conditions congenial for growing of
various field as well as fruits and plantation crops.
The college would help the farming community of the state in general and Hassan district in particular by way of producing well trained manpower, genuine agricultural inputs like seeds, planting materials and other information from time to time for overall development of the rural community.
At present the college has well equipped class rooms, laboratory and other facilities.
The campus is having well furnished hostel facility for both Boys and Girls.
Library, Auditorium, sports ground and pavilion are coming in a big way.
The college has good infrastructural facilities and well qualified teachers.
There are definitely a lot of opportunities for students to select the field of Agriculture,
Agricultural Bio-technology and Food Science areas for their career building and serve the
farming community. There is lot of scope for research and higher education in the areas
of agricultural bio-technology and value addition, preservation and marketing of these
products in the international market especially in the era of Liberalization, Privatization and
Globalization.
The University of Agrictultural Sciences, Bangalore came into existence on August 21, 1964. After bifurcation of the University in 1986, the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalroe covers 15 southern districts of Karnataka.
I am glad that from coming academic year 2007-08, this college is offering two more additional
degree programmes viz., B.Sc. (Ag Biotech) and B.Tech (Food Science) along with the B.Sc. (Agri).
Biotechnology is fast emerging new generation tool for Agricultural development.
There is a boom in development of Biotechnology industries. Food processing and
value addition is another fast emerging area which can bring prosperity to farming community.
Recently, Govt. of Karnataka has given major emphasis to food processing in its new Agricultural Policy.
However, there is a lack of well trained man power both in the field of Agricultural Biotechnology and Food Technology.
Hence, the graduates of this college have got ample scope and greater opportunities in the government,
public and private sectors.
