The College of Agriculture, Shimoga located in the heart of Malnad belt of Karnataka State , has a rich cultural heritage of Kannada language. The world famous “Jog Falls” is just 83 Kms away from Shimoga City. Tunga and Bhadra rivers pass through the twin cities of Shimoga and Bhadravathi and join together at Koodli, 20 Kms away from Shimoga and continue as famous Tungabhadra river. Agriculture and Horticulture are the main occupations of the people here. Arecanut, Banana, Paddy and Sugarcane are the predominant crops of the region. Tobacco, Maize, Cotton , some Oil seeds and Pulses are also cultivated by the farmers. There is an ample scope for dry land horticultural crops like Cashew, Mango, Sapota etc. The students are well trained in the above crops besides inculcating practical experiences in crop production and management aspects.
The College
campus is located at an altitude of 650 M above MSL,
latitutde of 14°0' N to 14°0' N and longitude of 75°40'
to 75°42'East. The average rainfall is about 800 mm and
the mean Max. & Min. Temperature are 35.80C in April and
14.8°C in January, respectively.
The Campus is totally calm and serene. The students get best out of personality development and counseling division. For the years 2004-05 and 2005-06, the B.Sc.(Agri.) students passed out of this college secured 1st ranks in the University and secured 10 and 8 gold medals each , respectively. Similarly maximum number of students i.e. 49 out of 57 and 47 out 69 students passed the Junior Research Fellowship examinations ( during 2004-05 and 2005-06 respectively) conducted by ICAR, New Delhi.
The College has been well equipped with various infrastructural facilities, senior professors and young talented faculty members. Campus recruitment processes are undertaken by various agencies for the past 2 years. Besides academics, the students of this college are also performing better in cultural and sports activities at the national level. National Service Scheme (NSS) has been introduced here from the past 3 years.
Awards
The College of Agriculture , Shimoga was Accredited by ICAR, New Delhi during the year 2003-04.
About 648 students were graduated from this College between 1990-91 to 2005-06.
So far 11 students in UG programme and 3 students in PG programme were awarded merit of certificates and gold medals from this College .
So far a total of 172 students passed out in Junior Research Fellowship Examinations (JRF) conducted by ICAR, New Delhi.
