In the late seventies and in the eighties, a significant change took place
in the agricultural scenario of the country. This change is marked by the dramatic
increase in the number of input suppliers. The change would not have been recognizable
but for the fact that the nature of inputs handled by these new agencies was entirely
different from those of the earlier industries which were confined to inorganic
fertilizers and pesticides. These new agencies were involved in such input supplies
as seeds, organic manure, bio-fertilizers, non pesticidal pest management inputs such
as pheromone traps, biological pest control agents like parasitoids, predators,
antagonistic fungi, pathogenic nematodes, bacteria, fungi etc. which were largely
until that time remained within the domains of the Governmental agencies such as
the SAUs, State departments of Agriculture, national research institutes/agencies
etc. Similarly, the expanding agriculture and related enterprises required other
kinds of inputs which included, machinery, agricultural implements, green houses,
glass houses, etc. In large measure the needed technological know how for these
industries as input was provided by the University. The more important fact is
that the University supplied the trained manpower required for these industries. |
|
| |
Similarly, the University also supported the growth of other allied enterprises
such as fish processing industry, poultry industry, meat and hide processing,
sericulture, floriculture, vegetable processing, and to certain extent the
dairy industry. The role of University in supporting these industries was in
the form of HRD, man power supply, technical know how, testing products &
procedures and trouble shooting. |
|
| |
One aspect of continued support that always existed was in testing the products.
Various kinds of products such as fertilizers, pesticides etc. were willingly
taken up by the scientists of the University. Such an activity has a dual role
of evaluation and certification as to the quality and performance of the
product. This technical capability on the part of the scientists has multiple
functions of generating policy decisions, certification for field performance,
certification for financial institutions such as banks and finally in
developing entrepreneurship through advise and training. |

Memorandum of Understanding with Private / Public Institutions |
|
| |
University is generating extra-mural resource funding from private and
public agencies involved in agriculture for funding programmes of mutual
interest. So far, University has entered MOU with Fifty (50) Private / Public
institutions for R&D for mutual benefit. Closer collaborations between
University and industries concerned are anticipated. |

SEED PRODUCTION |
|
| |
The seed production is an important activity of the University wherein
the breeder seeds are produced in several crops, besides, quality planting
materials are also produced in Horticulture crops. This programme is very
much essential and forms a fundamental step in further spreading the seed
production activity through the KSSC and other Agencies in the form of
foundation, certified and truthful seeds. During this year, seed village
concept was developed and the production programme was taken up in paddy
and groundnut. |
