Dr. P.G. Chengappa was born on 11th February 1952 in Kodagu district and hails from a family of Coffee planters. He completed his Bachelors in Agriculture from Agriculture College Dharwad in 1973. Worked under Professor NSP Rebellow for his Masters in Agricultural Economics, UAS, Bangalore (1976) .Awarded PhD in Agricultural Economics in 1990 by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi under the guidance of Professor MA Muralidharan. His Ph.D work on Econometric analysis of Coffee Prices in India lead to a series of research applications on spectral analysis of time series in tea, cardamom and other crops. He has specialized in Agricultural Marketing, Price Analysis and Policy, International Trade, Agribusiness Management.
He served UAS in the capacities of Director of Instruction (Agril), Registrar and Director of Student Welfare for a decade after serving as Professor and Head of Agricultural Marketing for 15 years. He is the senior most Professor at the UAS. As the Director of Instruction (Agri), he was instrumental in UAS receiving the ICAR’s Sardar Patel best Agricultural University award. He spearheaded preparation of the Accreditation Report on the basis of which UAS has been accredited by the ICAR.
As an Agricultural Economist in CGIAR institutes of IFPRI and IPGRI he contributed to concepts of value chain and IPR issues. He was the Visiting scientist at the IRRI, Manila, University of Reading, University College of Wales Aberystwyth, United Kingdom, ICRISAT, Hyderabad, and facilitator at German foundation for International Development (DSE), Germany in agricultural marketing. Currently, he is the Vice President, Indian Society of Agricultural Economics. He has served as the Vice President of the Agricultural Economics Research Association, New Delhi for four years.
Dr Chengappa was selected for the prestigious National Professor of the ICAR in 2007
With his rich teaching experience and administrative acumen, he was instrumental in bringing coveted extramural international research funding for projects from USAID in collaboration with IOWA State and Purdue Universities, on (i) developing sustainable agricultural models to meet the challenges of the 21st century challenges and (ii) Biotechnological approaches in improving rural nutrition, worth more than Rs. ten million. This project benefited several poor villagers and farmwomen through improvement of their nutritional status
