Realizing the importance of education in sericulture,
the University of Agricultural sciences (UAS) included
sericulture as a topic under Economic Entomology,
which was later taught as a separate course for all
the under graduates of the University. Later, in 1974,
the University created positions for instructional facilities
both at Hebbal and Dharwad campuses in the field of Sericulture.
Research activities were also initiated in the Department
of Entomology on silkworms as part of Postgraduate research.
During 1980, with the assistance of World Bank under Karnataka
Sericulture Project-I (KSP-I), M.Sc (Ag) in Sericulture was
started at the Entomology Department. In 1982 to cater to
the trained manpower needs of the State Sericulture Department
a 4-year B.Sc (Sericulture) degree programme on par with other
degrees of the University was started, subsequently one year
PG Diploma in Sericulture was also offered simultaneously at the Department.
In the year 1986 M.Sc (Seri) and PhD were started in the Department of Sericulture.
In the year 1995 the UG Programme was shifted to the newly established
Sericulture College at Chintamani. Ever since the Department has been
offering M.Sc (Seri) and PhD in Sericulture. programes.
Side by conducting research and handling many outside funded
research Projects including basic and applied aspects of Sericulture.
